United States Stenograph Co., St. Louis, Missouri, 1884 – serial no.2809

Photograph of the Stenograph 1, 3rd form.

The third and final form of the Bartholomew Stenograph differs primarily from the second form in having a protruding base that protects the keys from being bumped and broken. It is interesting to see that each of the three forms have a different mechanism to change the direction of the ribbon advance.

Found in the fine leather case for this Stenograph was a piece of paper with a most dutiful message that reads “A brave endeavour to do thy duty, what e’er its worth, is better than life with love forever — and love is the sweetest thing on earth.” — Jas Jeffery Roche
