The Caligraph 1 typewriter was the first competitor to appear after seven years of typewriter manufacturing by Remington & Sons, who began with the Sholes & Glidden in 1874.
The Caligraph 1 is much smaller than the model 2 Caligraph (1882) as its keyboard only has uppercase characters while the model 2 has both upper and lowercase characters.
