REMINGTON 2
Wyckoff, Seamans & Benedict, New York 1885
Serial #92364
|
The first Remington 2 was produced in 1885, the machine pictured here
dates from between 1893 and 1894.
This is an understrike, or blind, typewriter. To see what you have typed,
one lifts up the hinged carriage and looks at the underside of the platen.
The Remington typewriter along with other understrike machines, such as
the Densmore, Caligraph and Smith Premier typewriters were among the most
successful typing machines of their age. It was only with the emergence of
front-strike visible typewriters, such as the Pittsburg and Underwood,
around the 1900s, that the understrike machines finally lost their market
command and would completely disappear from the market by the advent of the
First World War.
